What's Happening

Dear San Diegans,

We haven't hit peak season for events yet, but there are some good ones to enjoy right now!

The San Diego Jewish Film Festival continues at the JCC (until next Wednesday).

Tonight's music and dance shows include the 3rd Villa-Lobos Festival concert at the Coronado Library, the Majesty of the Blues at Point Loma Nazarene, Irish music group Four Shillings Short at the International Cottages, and the dance performance Sol Invictus at the Balboa Theatre. Saturday, Los Fabulocos and the Sleepwalkers will perform at Tio Leo's. Sunday, the Latino jazz artists Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez will play at the  Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. Next Tuesday, the Grand Kyiv Ballet will perform Giselle at the Joan Kroc Theatre. Next Thursday, the Indonesian indie/pop duo Galdive will be at Music Box.

Next Wednesday, the film A Chicano Love Story will screen at Mission Bay High. Also on Wednesday, Yellow Rose will be shown at the Coronado Library. And next Friday, À l’abordage will screen at the French American School as part of their ongoing series.

Talks around town include Loretta Ellsworth discussing her book The Jilted Countess at Coral Tree Tea House, a talk at UCSD on the history of Coinage in Ukraine on Monday, a Zoominar on Advances in Disability Rights and Law in Japan and South Korea on Tuesday, and a UCSD talk on The Struggle for Hong Kong: A Decolonization Lens next Thursday. Also, next Thursday will be a talk at USD on Turkey’s Foreign Policy Across Eurasia: A Geopolitical Perspective.

Other local events include the M(other) Tongue exhibit opening at the Central Library on Saturday, the Setsubun festival at the Japanese Friendship Garden on Sunday, a Zodiac Puppet Craft Workshop at the Balboa Library next Thursday, and a workshop on Venetian Cosmetics at Allied Gardens Recreation Center (also next Thursday).

Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!

Recipe of the Month

Our recipe of the month is for Gulai Ayam Padang. A creamy, savory, and absolutely delicious chicken curry from West Sumatra, Indonesia!

CD of the Month

This Month's Music Selection is the eponymous-titled Nusantara Beats. The six-piece band hailing from Amsterdam is quickly becoming a must-see act. With a deep connection to their Indonesian roots and a passion for honoring their cultural heritage, Nusantara Beat brings a fresh and modern take on traditional Indonesian music. Nusantara Beat creates a unique sound that blends traditional Indonesian songs from the 20th century with their own style and creativity. The result is a mesmerising mix of tropical and mystical sounds that take the audience on a journey to the land of their ancestors.—Amazon

The Malay/Indonesian word "Nusantara" refers to the Malay/Indonesian archipelago. It is also the name for the new capitol of Indonesia!

Book of the Month

Our Book of the Month is Heart Lamp by Banu Mushtaq.

In the twelve stories of Heart Lamp, Banu Mushtaq exquisitely captures the everyday lives of women and girls in Muslim communities in southern India. Published originally in the Kannada language between 1990 and 2023, praised for their dry and gentle humor, these portraits of family and community tensions testify to Mushtaq’s years as a journalist and lawyer, in which she tirelessly championed women’s rights and protested all forms of caste and religious oppression.
